Beeleigh Abbey

Founded in 1180 as a premonstratensian monastery. Built of stone and clunch, the main fabric of most of the building dates back to 1220. The south timbered wing was built in 1624 and the smaller domestic wing was built in 1912. Main rooms included in tour are: Calefactory (warming room) with stone vaulted ceiling supported by Purbeck marble columns, Chapter House (now chapel), Dorter, or Great Room, now the library and James I bedroom. Three-and-half-acre gardens leading to River Chelmer, plus three and a half acres of paddock. Four ponds.

Abbey tour 1 hour, then visitors are free to explore the 3.5-acre garden. £15 including tea or coffee, cakes and biscuits.
