Brinton Hall

A 16th century house rebuilt in 1822 by the Brereton family. Fine staircase, hall and landing. Award winning work includes remodelling of the west front and restoration of all interior rooms. The grounds include formal and mixed beds, 19th century hot greenhouse, haha overlooking parkland, lake, woods and meadows plus a nearby 18th century working walled kitchen garden. The gardens are planted for year-round interest with particular reference to trees and shrubs. Seasonal interest is pointed up with a range of bulbs, annuals and perennials grown from seed. The staircase is reputed to originate from Merton Place, Horatio Nelson’s residence until his death. The house was a Brereton/Gurney county bank, bankrupted in the 1820s. Some Brereton graves have been revealed in the churchyard. Three Brereton portraits have been bought and restored, dating from 1660 to 1821. A fine collection of ancient flint tools found in field-walking the village are on display. Roman building materials from a local site can be seen and handled.
