Columbine Hall

The timber-framed manor house, with its jettied upper storey, was built by Robert le Hotot about 1390. It rises directly from a deep moat. Every successive owner can be traced since 1242 and includes a son of Sir James Tyrell, the probable murderer of the Princes in the Tower.
Bought by the present owners in 1993 and rescued from near dereliction. Much artifice in its restoration using skill, trickery and MDF to create a house featured in books and magazines as much for its decor as architecture. Owners reveal all.
Ever-changing collection (new: antique lifesize wooden Chinese deer).
Tour two and a half hours, £15 including tea and home-made cakes. Picnic in grounds. Owners’ books, plants on sale. Accommodation.
