Corpusty Mill

Corpusty Mill garden has been slowly evolving over the past 40 years. Begun in the mid 1960s, it was designed, planted and built by John and Roger Last – by Roger alone from 1990 on. It is an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary styles with romantic and formal planting. One of its chief features is a series of follies, including a four chamber grotto, designed and built by the brothers. The planting is varied and lush – lush because the entire garden is constructed on water meadows. Water is abundant in pools, streams and a small lake. The river Bure, which flows under the mill, bounds one side of the garden. The most complex part of the design is near the house, but two landscaped meadows are approached in a more relaxed manner. Here are to be found a modern folly – a tall stainless steel spire, a cascade and rill, sculpture and an elevated viewing platform. The combination of horticulture, architecture, design, detail and the creation of atmosphere all combine to give the garden its unique sense of place.
