Layer Marney Tower

Grade I red-brick Tudor gatehouse, decorated with wonderful Italianate terracotta. Henry VIII was so impressed by the palace, he came to stay while it was still being built. Henry, First Lord Marney, was Henry VIII's Lord Privy Seal. He died in 1523 and work stopped two years later. The church was altered to match the house and has two effigy tombs of Henry, First Lord Marney and his son, John.
Tour 2-2½ hours, £14. Morning tours include tea or coffee with cakes or biscuits; candlelit tour includes mulled wine and nibbles.
