Playford Hall Gardens

Playford Hall was built circa 1560 on the site of an older house. It is of traditional Elizabethan design, although half the house was destroyed around 1750. Thomas Clarkson, liberator of slaves with William Wilberforce, lived and died here and the Queen of Haiti stayed here as his house guest. Clarkson is buried in Playford churchyard. The building is grade II* listed. The romantic moated property is set in 10 acres of outstanding garden. Trees, lawns and a lake surround the house, with yew hedges dividing herbaceous and shrub borders full of unusual plants. Roses cascade over the house and moat walls. There is also a herb garden, orchard and an attractive redesigned vegetable garden in miniature French château style.

Tour approx 2½ hours, £8 including tea, cakes and biscuits.
