West Lexham

There has been a farm at West Lexham since medieval times. The village still boasts a Saxon round tower church. The farm was part of the Holkham Estate when the Georgian facade to the Grade II Manor House was added.  This facade is made of the distinctive yellow Holkham brick while the grand old farmhouse behind is of traditional red brick and flint panels. The beautiful outbuildings including traditional cart shed and granary barn date back to 1805 and are flint, with pantile or pintile roofs. The landscaped gardens include a traditional Georgian floating watermeadow, and Site of Special Scientific Interest with wild flowers, the River Nar, a treehouse, the moat, ponds, a vegetable garden and a folly with murals made of a vast collection of shells looking over the river and meadows.

The traditional farmyard is now being made into an education centre based around skills for a sustainable future. The buildings are being converted to provide accommodation, teaching space, kitchens and workshop spaces.

The vision is to make West Lexham a living, breathing showcase for exemplary living in the 21st century. Somewhere that investigates and puts into practice leading philosophies and technologies for the future, uses renewable energy, grows local food, grows the local economy through micro enterprise and jobs, enhances the land and biodiversity, and creates a vital centre for sustainable and creative living, imbibed with technicolour and a whole host of active ingredients.
