Invitation to View houses feature in two new volumes of James Bettley and Nikolaus Pevsner’s The Buildings of England (Suffolk: East and Suffolk: West), and of all the architectural gems in the west of Suffolk, Columbine Hall, Stowupland, has been chosen to illustrate the back cover of Suffolk: West. The front cover illustration is Bury St Edmunds cathedral tower. The books are published this month by Yale at £35. The hall, which is also illustrated in the main text, is described as ‘an enchanting moated house….dating from c 1390.’ The modern conversion by Melvyn Smith of a set of dreary farm offices into a C17-style clock tower is also mentioned. Columbine Hall open dates under Invitation to View are May 9, June 13, July 9 & 17, August 4 & 26. Groups are also welcome as are tours of the four-acre gardens which have just featured in Die geheimen Gärten von England (Secret Gardens of England), also out this month.
